Marketing is full of buzzwords. We throw around terms like “strategy” and “tactics” all the time. But do we really understand what they mean?
For example, a marketing strategy might be to expand your law firm’s geographic reach in Google Search and Google Maps. A marketing tactic is something you do to accomplish that strategy, like adding service areas to your Google Business Profile or creating social media content for targeted locations.
“Marketing plan” is another misunderstood buzzword. When an attorney asks a marketer to create one, they often misunderstand what it truly entails.
Let’s break down what a law firm marketing plan is and what it is not.
What a Law Firm Marketing Plan Contains:
- Outline of primary marketing goals and how those goals will be measured- This section clearly defines what you want to achieve with your marketing efforts. It also outlines how you’ll track progress and measure success. For example, if your goal is to increase website traffic, you might track metrics like unique visitors, page views, and bounce rate.
- Set of strategies the law firm will use to reach their goals- Remember, marketing strategies are theories of what might work and why, not a checklist of “to-do” items. They provide a framework for your marketing efforts. For example, a strategy might be to focus on content marketing to attract and engage potential clients.
- List of tactics the law firm will use to implement their strategies- Outlines the actions you’ll take to bring your strategies to life. For example, tactics for a content marketing strategy might include blogging, creating ebooks, and hosting webinars.
- Competitor analysis- Analyze your competitors’ marketing efforts. It identifies their strengths and weaknesses, and helps you find opportunities to differentiate your firm.
- Brand and implementation guidelines- Defines your law firm’s brand identity, including your messaging, visual style, and target audience. It also outlines how you’ll implement your marketing plan across different channels.
- Budget and timelines- Outlines the financial resources allocated to your marketing efforts and establishes a timeline for implementing your plan.
What a Law Firm Marketing Plan Does NOT Contain:
- Step-by-step instructions of “how to do SEO” or other specific tactics. A marketing plan provides a high-level overview of your marketing strategy. It doesn’t delve into the nitty-gritty details of implementation.
- All marketing assets. Marketing assets, like website copy, blog posts, and social media graphics, are created during the implementation phase, not the planning phase.
- Detailed scripts, copy, blogs, or other content. Again, these are created during implementation. The marketing plan focuses on the overall strategy and direction.
Why You Need a Marketing Plan
Developing a marketing plan helps you refine your overall marketing strategy. It forces you to think critically about your goals, your target audience, and your competitive landscape.
However, there are no “sure things” in marketing. Each marketing plan is custom-tailored to the specific law firm, and the owner must actively participate in its development.
While it’s tempting to have your team create marketing assets as you develop your plan, understand that assets are flexible and can be easily changed during implementation. The purpose of a marketing plan is to put all your ideas on paper to mentally test their efficacy, which is an ongoing process. That’s why we revisit marketing plans annually.
A marketing plan is a living document. It should be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure it remains aligned with your goals and the ever-changing marketing landscape.
